OWB Visits The YCC Women's Center in Ogden, UT

We are so grateful that we got to be a part of this amazing organization. We loved seeing how much the YCC does for the community and how awesome the staff was! The YCC Family Crisis Center is a beacon for those going through Domestic Violence, Rape and Sexual Assault. They provide resources such as shelter, counseling, classes and transitional housing. This amazing organization relies heavily on donations and grants to continue helping victims become survivors.

Here are some statistics that we have learned that show us why places like the YCC are so important:

  • 1 in 4 women in the United States will experience Domestic Violence in their lifetime
  • 1 in 3 female homicide victims are murdered by their current or former partner every year.
  • Without early intervention, young girls who witness domestic violence are most likely to become a victim of DV. Without early intervention, young boys who witness DV are most likely to become abusers.
  • Men are the victims of nearly 3 million physical assaults a year in the US.

The need for resources for victims of Domestic Violence is colossal. Many times a victim does not know where to turn or what to do next in a domestic violence situation. If a victim does not receive assistance in a timely matter, the chance of them returning to their abuser increases significantly.

Many families who come to the shelter come with little to no belongings. The YCC gives each family a hygiene kit and a clothing voucher. It is common for women to be pressured by their abuser to not work; this is to ensure that the victim becomes financially dependent to their partner. While their basic needs are covered at the YCC such as finding clothing for a job interview, many times they are lacking self-confidence.

The OWB team went to the YCC to tour their newly renovated facility. In 2013 and 2014 the YCC had to turn 412 people away because of lack of space in their shelter, since the renovations were made, no one has yet been turned away. OWB believes that every woman deserves to feel empowered and have self-confidence. And we wanted to give back to these courageous women who have taken the first step of taking back their lives. We donated our flat iron gift boxes to the clients at the YCC along with a gift pack of finger puppets for the children living there.

The YCC has an amazing staff and they work tirelessly to provide such amazing services for their community. They are in constant need of donations and volunteers to help them keep going.

We are so grateful to the staff of YCC for allowing us to see all the amazing work they do. If you are interested in helping you can find them here: http://www.yccogden.org/
